Jordgubbshovdessert
So, my mother gave me a huge pint of fresh strawberries from the farmer's market today. I'd say it was more than a pint, but I'm not exactly sure how much, so I'm saying "huge pint". I didn't quite know what to do with them, but finally I figured out that I ought to make marangsviss, or hovdessert, but with strawberries instead! Marangsviss or hovdessert usually has meringues, vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, and chocolate sauce. But I decided to use fresh strawberries and homemade strawberry sauce instead. I was inspired by my British friend when she made a "strawberry mess" for her daughter's birthday last year. I asked her, 'What is a "strawberry mess"?' and she described it to me and I told her that it sounded very much like a Swedish dessert I had as a child, but with chocolate sauce instead, which is the marangsviss or hovdessert.
I decided to go get some heavy whipping cream from Whole Foods. They didn't have any good meringues there, but I knew that Trader Joe's had some wonderful meringues, so I went to Trader Joe's and got some meringues.
I then decided to look up how to make strawberry sauce, and I found this recipe: Easy Strawberry Sauce http://localfoods.about.com/od/desserts/qt/strawberrysauce.htm - I deviated a bit from this recipe by adding some bourbon vanilla extract. Awesome! Easy to make your own strawberry sauce!
I let the strawberries macerate for a good couple of hours. I then made the whipping cream in the blender with some sugar and vanilla sugar. I ran out of the bourbon vanilla extract when I was making the strawberry sauce.
I then put the meringues in the bottom of a bowl, topped it with strawberry sauce, then ice cream, then strawberry sauce, then whipped cream, then fresh quartered or halved strawberries, and then repeated the layer. Mmm. Supergott! Or super awesome!
Smaklig maltid!
